Activities

Project Overview

TWEET-IE is organized into seven Work Packages (WPs).

The first five WPs materialize and monitor the progress of the work under the three project's pillars. WP6 is dedicated to dissemination and exploitation and WP7 to management and coordination. WP1 is a horizontal WP, which extends over the entire duration of the project and monitors-assesses the progress of the activities planned within the vertical WPs 2-5.

TWEET-IE - Twin Wind tunnels for Energy & the Enviroment

WP1: Project monitoring and evaluation

The objectives of WP1 is to monitor/assess the progress of the activities planned within the following vertical WPs

Following an assessment of the status quo of NTUA’s WT facility, a number of KPIs will be defined covering technical competence, administrative skills and management capacities. A feasible plan of foreseeable and measurable short term (within the duration of the project) and longer term (with a horizon of two years after the end of the project) improvements will be developed. The main focus of the WP is to monitor and evaluate these improvements on the basis of the defined KPIs

WP2: Widening of administration and management capabilities

The obfjective of WP2 is to improve the administration and management capabilities of the facility

Institutional reforms, training activities for the administrative personnel and activities to ensure sustainability of the facility. Establishment of a dedicated administration and management unit at NTUA. Leading Partners will share best practices with NTUA personnel in administration and management related sessions at the Grand Opening Event. Certification and Accreditation opportunities identified and pursued. WG-HMR and WG-CA will meet at a dedicated live plenary Training Workshop on Administrative and Management (M12) to exchange outcomes and lay the groundwork for a sustainability plan. Key administrative and management personnel from NTUA will be invited

WP3: Twin Tests

The objective of WP3 is to materialize the research and technical strategy of the project.

This is the Research Component of TWEET-IE corresponding to pillar II: Widening of technical capacity and competence via the Twin Tests (Twin Tests - TWTs) benchmarking campaigns. Their results will address the main research challenge i.e. to identify, characterize, categorize and then restrain important sources (external conditions, testing equipment etc.) of deviations between test data obtained at different tunnels. Extra time is allotted during each TWT for corrective measures and measurements, should significant deviations arise between tests. NTUA WT capabilities will be compared to state of the art and particularities will be defined. Each TWT constitutes a different task in the WP, comprising at least two WT test campaigns of identical test matrices: one at NTUA and the other at one of the Leading Partners. Both tests will be conducted by NTUA scientific and technical personnel under the guidance and supervision of specialized personnel of the corresponding Leading Partner. Technical competence for the TWT but also for future activities and NTUA research profile enhancement, is achieved through training activities that are considered separately in WP4.

TWT1. Twin Tests on the effects of vegetation on flows in the urban environment. (NTUA, KIT)

TWT2. Twin Tests on wake interactions of a cluster of turbines and wake steering techniques. (NTUA, TUM)

TWT3. Twin Tests on scale effects in urban flows. (NTUA, TUD)

TWT4. Twin Tests on micro devices for enhanced performance of airfoil sections. (NTUA, POLIMI)

WT tests will be supported by CFD calculations performed by NTUA with in-house and/or open-source software tools In all the above Tasks numerical simulations and their data will be in kind contribution of NTUA to the project.

WP4: Widening of technical capacity and competence

The objectives of WP4 is to advance the technical capacity of NTUA WT facility scientific and technical personnel.

Training activities and relevant material for transfer of technical know-how to upgrade technical capacity of NTUA, based on techniques applied during the TWT.

Technical sessions on measurement techniques and WT testing will be held at the GOE and a dedicated virtual plenary Training Workshop on WT measurements will take place with emphasis on unification of best practices in wind engineering WT measurements. TWT training activities are planned by the WG of every test during the TWT tests at both NTUA and Leading Partners premises.

Two international summer schools will take place on wind energy, building and environmental aerodynamics and measurement issues such as design of physical models, scaling laws and uncertainty quantification with lectures and hands-on training.

All technical training material of the four TWTs will be collected into a “book of references” including reports, presentations and videos for wind energy and environmental flow related WT experiments. In the “book of references”, besides existing, already established knowledge, the new knowledge and the lessons learnt through conducting the TWTs will be also recorded. The “book of references” will be updated on the project webpage every time one of the TWTs is concluded.

Summer school educational material will be documented and will become available on the project web page

WP5: Widening of visibility and profile

The objective of WP5 is to enhance visibility and profile of the Widening Partner NTUA and to widen NTUA's horizon in attracting research or commercial funding.

WG-III1-EU and WG-III2-IN will meet at the GOE to plan visibility and profile activities. A dedicated live plenary Workshop on Outreaching/Visibility/Profile improvement will take place (M24) where the WGs will wrap up completed and ongoing work and two industry focused technical training schools.

A survey will be performed of specific research topics currently attracting EU funding, anticipating NTUA’s WT facility research role as complementary to other facilities.

A survey will be performed of industry needs (national and European) relevant to NTUA’s WT facility. Two specialized training schools at NTUA, in conjunction with TWTs (WP4), on the industry focused topics of assessment of wake interactions in wind farms, modern optical diagnostics, structural wind loading. Proceedings of these schools will be made available on the project web page. Furthermore a new up to date web page will be created with emphasis on exploiting NTUA numerical simulation capacity and experience, enhancement and upgrade of provided services to industry (anemometers calibration, wind load measurements for construction companies etc.). This is linked to certification issues of WP2.

An inventory of relevant working groups/networks currently active in Europe will be performed. Planning of research activities to support its participation in each of them (the planned TWTs already serve this goal). Participation in EU Brokerage events to promote NTUA capacity for research collaboration with WT testing services. Other planned actions are i) presentations at Researcher’s Night events, ii) visits, presentations and demonstration tests iii) annual reports of all activities conducted in the WT.

WP6: Dissemination, Communication and Exploitation

The objectives of WP6 are as follows:

• Draft and implement a dissemination, communication and exploitation Master Plan identifying the path from the project short term achievements to long term sustainability of the facility
• Enhance the awareness of results to academia and professional target groups

A Dissemination, Communication and Exploitation Master Plan will be released at the end of the sixth month and will be reviewed and revised on a 6 monthly basis.

- Develop specific TWEET-IE project identity to promote project visibility to third parties through a project logo, a MS PowerPoint template and document/publication template. - Develop project website with the most important results and news messages. Functional at M3 to facilitate early and continuous communication of research activities. A restricted sharepoint will be accessible with information and material reserved to the project partners. - ResearchGate, LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook will be used on a systematic 6-month basis and during the WT experiments. At key moments in time, messages and press releases will be announced - Physical flyers and posters will be printed at important events e.g. to announce the public Grand Closing Event of WP1 and the open Technical Workshop of WP4. - Television channels will be invited for a tour, presentation and exhibition.

Presentations and publications of the technical achievements of WP3 include a) presentations at major conferences, b) articles in technical magazines and scientific journals and c) deliverables uploaded to project web site.

Production of a Research Data Management plan (RDM plan). Data sets produced by TWTs and the respective HiFi CFD data will be securely stored separately by each partner. Setup of web-based validation portal. Data will be made available to a list of interested research groups via a round-robin exercise, which will be analyzed and presented at the Grand Closing Event and subsequently published.
